Basic Self Defense
About the Course
Class size recommendation: 3 students minimum
Age recommendation: 6 and up
This course is a blend of teaching kids to be physically competent and mentally aware of issues pertaining to their personal safety. This class primarily focuses on avoiding a fight via proper recognition of danger cues and good decision making. Students will learn about how the brain communicates to the body that something dangerous is going on (stress arousal system), and why that can them feel like they need to fight, run-away, or freeze up. We will teach them about paying attention to their environment and the people in it (situational awareness). Additionally, we will teach them how to create effective plans to take action in a situation where they feel uneasy. In conjunction with those assessment and decision-making skills we will explore some basic physical defense skills ranging from non-confrontational (distancing and verbal communication) to physically engaged (strikes, grounding, running away).
Comfortable clothing (movement and sweating considerations) is essential for this class.
This class is a blend of: Physical Education, Science, History
