Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Basics
About the Course
Class size recommendation: 3 or more
Age recommentation: 6 and up
This is an introduction into the fundamental movements and basic skills used in one of the most popular grappling arts outside of traditional wrestling. This is a purely physical class, and as such requires appropriate attire. While the traditional practice of this sport takes place in a “gi” (specialized kimono style jacket and pants) the more modern practice of “no gi” affords an opportunity to play the sport without having to spend a significant amount on specialized clothing. We will be teaching this class in a "no gi" manner. See the bold section at the bottom for information on appropriate attire.
***We are not in the business of doing belt rankings/promotions. If your kids do find they love the sport and want to join a traditional gym, we are happy to make recommendations.***
Our instructors have various experience in this sport, other grappling sports, and other martial arts:
Joe Eckes is a current Blue Belt in BJJ (3 years experience), with additonal various experience in Karate, Taekwondo, and Krav Maga. In addition, he spent 8 years as the lead Use of Force Instructor for Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.
Reed Soeffker has 8 years of wrestling experience in addition to various experience in BJJ, boxing, and HEMA sword fighting (historical european martial arts). In addition he spent 5 years as a Use of Force Instructor for Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.
Athletic shorts/Board shorts and a rash guard shirt (long or short sleeve) are required. Fingernails and toenails must be neatly trimmed for safety. Mouthgards are heavily encouraged to protect against incidental contact with jaw or mouth.
