For: Any HEM Student aged 12 years or older (See parental discretion statement below, click on "show more" button)

When: May 2, 2024 9:30am - 1:30pm

Class is 3.5 hours of lecture, practical work, and group based examination. Students will leave with a keychain emergency cpr mask and materials to study at home. There will be a 30 minute lunch break, students will need to provide their own lunch. First aid materials will be provided in class, however students should bring a notebook and pencil or pen for any notetaking they wish to do.

In this course, students will be taught by 15 year police veteran, and HEM 3rd Grade teacher, Joe Eckes. Mr. Eckes' career in Law Enforcement included service with the Emergency Services Unit (SWAT), WMD team (SWAT function in specialized environments- chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosives threats), and Mobile Field Force for civil disturbances. The last 8.5 years of his career were spent as a Sergeant in charge of training and professional development of other officers; to include emergency response and basic life saving care.  In this course students will learn about a variety of medical emergencies they might encounter in real life and how to deal with or treat injuries resulting from those emergencies. They types of injuries students will learn about are as follows:

-Heart Attacks and Strokes

-Heat and Cold Related emergencies

-Abrasions, Cuts, Avulsions, and Crushing type injuries

-Burns

-Penetrative injuries (with or without imbedded objects)

- Arterial and Venous bleeds

-Anaphylaxis (allergic reactions)

-Tension pneumothorax (penetrative injury to the chest area, sometimes called a sucking chest         wound)

Students will also work through an assessment system, similar to what first responders use, to judge scene safety and triage the various injuries they are observing.  Topics covered in the assessment system are:

-Scene Safety, and Responder Safety

-Airway management

-Patient awareness/consciousness assessment

-CPR*** vs Rescue Breathing and when to use either one

-Injury assessment and care

-Using the SAMPLE survey to collect further information from a conscious patient

-Monitoring for changes in breathing, circulation, or consciousness.

PARENTAL DISCRETION: As this class deals with injuries and medical emergencies, we will be covering weapon related injuries like stabbings or shootings.  Our focus will be how life threatening injuries can occur and how to treat them, but we will not be sharing "cop stories" with the children. We will also be showing some images of types of injuries (burns, cuts, etc...).  We will not have photos that show any parts of the body related to gender, nor will there  be excessively gory images shown.  However there may be some images with blood or damage shown to the human body. We will keep them to a minimum, and no images or videos of violence being done to a person will be shown.  Please use your best judgement as to what your child can or cannot handle.

***This class is not accredited with the Red Cross or any organization that offers certifiation of the skills taught herein
